STORM PREDICTION CENTER

Introduction to Storm Prediction Center:

The Storm Prediction Center is situated in Norman, Oklahoma and works under the supervision of National Weather service (NWS). Storm Prediction Center is one among the seven National Centers for Environmental Predictions (NCEP). The main objective of Storm Prediction Center is to provide accurate and timely weather forecasts, with regards to terrible thunderstorms and tornadoes bordering United States. The Storm Prediction Centre (SPC) also observes intense rains, heavy snow fall and other weather forecasts across US. It stands accountable for predicting the risk of stern climatic conditions. The SPC identifies, quantifies and describes the severity ascertained with the harsh weather conditions, especially if the weather shows the tendency of forming tornadoes. It has developed certain specific products that are issued while the dangers of storms persist. The products include watches that observe severe thunderstorms, weather watches, special tornado watches and mesoscale discussions.

Categorization by Storm Prediction Centre:

The SPC has categorically differentiated the severity of thunderstorms that are observed bordering the United States. The three categories are based on the area, time periods and weather parameters that are predicted become specific with the level of intensifying alertness. Below are the levels of categories mentioned by the SPC:-

  1. Slight Threat: A day which is categorized as slight risk, poses a threat of strewn severe climatic conditions. A slight risk weather forecast by SPC means that there can be wind damages and perhaps few isolated tornadoes in the weather.
  2. Moderate Threat: This prediction is the indicator of a probably more severe and dangerous weather conditions. A moderate risk day will include several tornadoes and the damage due to severe wind of high intensity.
  3. High threat: If the SPC predicts the likelihood of a high risk day, then there is an indication of an outbreak of major tornado. These days are considered to pose severe and life-threatening climatic conditions. It has been observed by the SPC that high risk day are predicted very less often in a year.

Miscellaneous:

Mesoscale Discussions is one of the important tools that are designed by the SPC to give the local forecasters, the information about severe weather risk in a particular region. Mesoscale Discussion normally, precedes severe thunderstorms or tornadoes that are observed in the weather by almost 3 hours. Mesoscale Discussions sometimes are issued for intense rainfall and frost weather predictions.
